Getting started
What devices and consoles does Portal support?
Portal runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac (Apple Silicon), Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro (OS 26 or later). You can stream from PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One consoles, play PS and Xbox Cloud Gaming natively, and on Mac, iPad and Vision Pro you can plug in any HDMI source through a UVC capture card.
Is Portal free?
Portal is free to download and try. Premium memberships unlock the full feature set and are available as weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly or lifetime purchases — including affordable single-platform tiers (Sapphire for PlayStation, Emerald for Xbox) and family-sharing options.
Do I need a PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription?
Remote play does not require any subscription — you just need a console you own. Cloud gaming requires the relevant provider subscription: PlayStation Plus Premium for PS cloud streaming, or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Can I play away from home, over the internet?
Yes. After logging into your account, Portal can connect to your console remotely over the internet. For best results keep your console in Rest Mode with remote play enabled, use a wired (ethernet) console connection, and a reasonably fast upload connection at home. Quality on mobile data depends on your carrier.
What is HDMI / UVC capture and which adapter do I need?
On Mac, iPad and Apple Vision Pro, Portal can display video from a USB-C UVC capture card plugged into your device — connect your console's HDMI output to the capture card, same as connecting it to a TV. This bypasses the network completely, so there is zero streaming lag. Any standard UVC-compliant HDMI capture card (1080p60 or 4K) works.
Streaming quality
Why is my streaming stuttering?
Portal is developed natively using Apple frameworks and deeply optimized for Apple Silicon. Stuttering is almost always caused by network configuration rather than the app itself. Common causes and fixes:
- Set your Wi-Fi router channel to 149 (5GHz), 44 (5GHz) or 6 (2.4GHz) — Apple Vision Pro frequently hops Wi-Fi channels to look for AirPlay/Handoff signals, causing packet loss. These are the channels Apple devices use to communicate, so setting them stops the hopping. This step is essential.
- Connect your console to the router with an ethernet cable, and verify in console network settings that it is using ethernet.
- Turn off Mac Virtual Display and other apps consuming Wi-Fi bandwidth.
- If you use a custom bitrate and see broken or jittery frames, lower the bitrate.
- Sit closer to your router; turn off Location, AirPlay and Handoff receiving on Vision Pro.
- Reboot the router and check no other device is saturating the connection.
- If streaming still isn't ideal for your setup, use a direct HDMI cable connection — it bypasses the network entirely and guarantees the smoothest experience.
How do I stream HDR video from PS5 Console?
A true HDR signal is available from PS5 and newer consoles. For PS4, Xbox and cloud sources, Portal applies accurate tone mapping to convert the video to HDR. To enable HDR streaming on PS5:
- Enable HDR in PS5 system settings (recommended: Always On) and in Portal's video settings.
- Some games (e.g. God of War Ragnarök) detect the remote play color space automatically. Most games only check the connected TV/display — turn on your HDR TV first to trigger HDR output, then the TV can be turned off. An HDMI switch can also mimic a connected HDR display.
- Check the in-game display settings to verify HDR is active and adjust brightness to taste.
How does 3D work on Apple Vision Pro?
Portal supports two paths to true depth:
- AI depth estimation — converts any 2D video stream into real-time 3D, tuned for games.
- Side-by-side (SBS) — for video that is already packed as 3D, Portal displays it as stereoscopic 3D.
Why does the frame rate drop sometimes in immersive mode on Vision Pro?
This is a combination of a visionOS bug and thermal mitigation on Apple Vision Pro: to prevent overheating, the system can halve display refresh from 90Hz to 45Hz in a standalone immersive space, especially after repeatedly opening and dismissing immersive spaces. To avoid it:
- Close any visionOS built-in virtual environment.
- Exit and re-enter immersive mode — the mitigation often won't re-trigger.
- Reboot your Vision Pro and let it cool down for a while.
PlayStation
Why can't Portal find my PSN online ID?
- Your PSN online ID is not your login email — it's the display name shown on your PSN account.
- Your account may be set to private. Make sure it's set so anyone can find you.
- You can also simply log in to PSN inside Portal instead.
Why can't Portal pair my PlayStation, while other apps can?
- Make sure the PIN you entered is correct, and that it comes from the settings menu of the same account you want to pair.
- Make sure no port forwarding is configured for your PlayStation console.
- The pairing ports may be occupied by another remote play app. Disable and re-enable remote play on your PlayStation; if it still doesn't pair, reboot the PlayStation and your router.
Controllers
Does Portal support DualSense controllers?
Yes. Portal is the only app that supports all DualSense features wirelessly — even the official Sony remote play app doesn't. That includes haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion sensor, light bar sync and the touchpad.
When I connect my controller, why does the session quit?
Your controller is connecting to the PlayStation console itself, which kicks off your remote play session. Pair the controller to your Apple device (e.g. Apple Vision Pro) via Bluetooth instead.
Troubleshooting & billing
Why does Portal crash or behave unexpectedly?
Try rebooting your device first — system caches (particularly on visionOS) can occasionally cause unexpected behaviour. Regular releases are pushed to the App Store to address known issues, so please keep Portal up to date. If a problem persists, contact portal.support@oversoul.love.
How do I cancel or change my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed through your Apple ID and managed by Apple. Open Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device (or the App Store app) to change or cancel at any time. Some tiers support Family Sharing.
